Spain is one of the UK’s leading holiday destinations and it’s also one of the world’s most walkable countries, according to a new study.

Spain has earned significant recognition not only as one of the UK's favourite holiday destinations but also as one of the most walkable countries in the world. Recent studies emphasize the high walkability of Spanish cities, making them ideal for visitors who enjoy exploring on foot.

Seville

Seville stands out prominently, having been named Europe's most walkable city. The city's major attractions, such as the Plaza de España, the Real Alcázar, and Seville Cathedral, are all within short walking distances. The historic Barrio Santa Cruz neighbourhood, with its narrow streets and hidden cafes, adds to Seville's charm, making it an excellent location for leisurely walks. Visiting Seville in autumn is particularly recommended due to the milder temperatures compared to the scorching summer heat.

Madrid

Madrid also ranks highly in terms of walkability. The city is noted for its extensive network of walking trails and accessible urban spaces. These features not only enhance the tourist experience but also support the city's residents in leading active lifestyles. The pedestrian-friendly environment makes it easy for visitors to explore Madrid's cultural and historical sites without the need for a car.

Bilbao

Another city worth mentioning is Bilbao, which, despite its size, is highly walkable. The city's layout and infrastructure support a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere, encouraging both locals and tourists to navigate the city on foot.

COSTA DEL SOL

The Costa del Sol, known for its stunning coastline and vibrant cities, also boasts highly walkable areas, particularly in cities like Malaga, Marbella, and Sotogrande.

MALAGA

Malaga has made significant efforts to improve walkability through urban planning.

Historic Centre: The pedestrian-friendly streets of Malaga's historic centre are filled with attractions such as the Malaga Cathedral, the Alcazaba fortress, and the Picasso Museum. The city has expanded pedestrian zones, making it easier to explore these sites on foot.

Malaga Park and Promenade: The seaside promenade and adjacent park offer scenic routes for walking along the coast, connecting various cultural and recreational spots.

MARBELLA

Marbella combines its luxurious appeal with walkable urban planning.

Old Town (Casco Antiguo): Marbella's old town features narrow, winding streets, historic buildings, and charming squares, creating a delightful environment for walking.

Marbella Promenade: Stretching along the coastline, this promenade is perfect for leisurely walks with views of the Mediterranean and access to beachside cafes and shops.

SOTOGRANDE

Sotogrande, known for its upscale lifestyle and beautiful surroundings, also offers excellent walking opportunities.

Marina and Beach: The marina area, with its luxury yachts and waterfront cafes, provides a scenic route for walks. The nearby beaches are also easily accessible on foot, offering a peaceful setting for a stroll.

Green Spaces: Sotogrande is dotted with well-maintained parks and green spaces, making it an ideal location for walking, and enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

These findings emphasize Spain's dual appeal as both a beloved holiday spot and a prime location for walking enthusiasts, reflecting its blend of cultural allure and pedestrian-friendly urban planning.

COSTA BLANCA

The Costa Blanca, particularly the cities of Alicante and Valencia, offers excellent opportunities for walking. These areas are designed to be pedestrian-friendly and easily navigable on foot.

VALENCIA

Valencia is one of Spain's most pedestrian-friendly cities and has been recognised for its effective urban planning, which significantly enhances walkability. The city's layout includes a mix of modern and historic areas, all easily accessible on foot.

Historic Centre: Known as Ciutat Vella, this area is particularly walkable, with narrow, winding streets filled with historical landmarks such as the Valencia Cathedral, the Lonja de la Seda, and the Central Market. This area prioritizes pedestrians, making it easy to explore the rich history and culture of the city on foot.

Turia Gardens: A former riverbed transformed into a nine-kilometre-long green space, Turia Gardens connects various neighbourhoods and provides a scenic route for walkers and cyclists. It houses numerous attractions, including sports facilities, playgrounds, and botanical gardens, making it a central hub for outdoor activities.

City of Arts and Sciences: Located at the eastern end of the Turia Gardens, this futuristic complex designed by Santiago Calatrava includes the science museum, the Oceanografic aquarium, and the Hemisfèric IMAX cinema. The pedestrian paths in this area are wide and well-maintained, facilitating easy access between attractions and encouraging walking and cycling.

ALICANTE

Alicante's urban planning supports a pedestrian-friendly environment, particularly in its city centre and coastal areas.

Explanada de España: This iconic promenade, lined with palm trees and paved with mosaic tiles in a wave pattern, is perfect for leisurely walks along the waterfront. It offers views of the marina and access to various shops and cafes.

El Barrio: The historic old town, with its narrow, winding streets filled with bars, restaurants, and historic buildings, is another highly walkable area. The pedestrian-friendly nature of this district makes it a vibrant spot for both daytime exploration and nightlife.

Santa Bárbara Castle: For those looking for a more challenging walk, the Santa Bárbara Castle is accessible via a steep path from the city centre. The walk to the castle offers panoramic views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea, rewarding walkers with both exercise and stunning vistas.

These findings emphasize Spain's dual appeal as both a beloved holiday spot and a prime location for walking enthusiasts, reflecting its blend of cultural allure and pedestrian-friendly urban planning.
