Celebrating Spanish Mother's Day: A Tradition of Appreciation

This year, as the vibrant blooms of early May grace the landscapes of Spain families across Spain will come together on Sunday, May 5, 2024, to celebrate Día de la Madre. Unlike in the UK, where Mother's Day changes dates each spring, in Spain, this special day is consistently marked on the first Sunday of May.

Why the First Sunday in May?

Historically Mother's Day in Spain can be traced back to religious origins as was celebrated on December 8, coinciding with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a celebration that dates back to the 17th century.

The date of the first Sunday in May was established in 1965 by the Spanish government as a way to honour all mothers and their important role in society. Since then, it has become a popular celebration in which mothers are honoured and thanked for their love and sacrifice.

Celebrations in Spain

In Spain, Día de la Madre is an opportunity to show gratitude and love towards mothers and mother figures. In addition to handcrafted presents made by the children, flowers, cards and gifts, an abundance of food is involved, as with most Spanish celebrations celebrating with a family meal either at home or favourite restaurant.

A Global Perspective on Mother's Day

Interestingly, Spain isn't alone in celebrating Mother's Day in May. Spain joins many other countries, observing Mother's Day on two successive Sundays this May—on the 5th and the 12th. These dates represent a rich tapestry of cultural significance and diverse historical roots, spanning from the United States to Portugal and Hungary, each embracing unique traditions and stories.

For instance, in the United States, Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday of May. This tradition, established by Anna Jarvis in 1914, honours the sacrifices mothers make for their children. Meanwhile, countries like Portugal and Hungary celebrate on the first Sunday of May, sharing this date with Spain.

Mother's Day in Mexico however always takes place on May 10, regardless of which day of the week it happens to fall on.

Reflecting on Motherhood

The English author Agatha Christie wrote “A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity. It dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path”

As we approach Spanish Mother's Day, it’s a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the profound impact of mothers and mother figures in our lives.

In celebrating Día de la Madre, we join millions around the globe in acknowledging the enduring love and sacrifices of mothers and mother figures providing a moment of gratitude and reflection and a chance to say "Thank you" in countless languages and countless ways.
